Despite the enormous power of teams, most organizations severely underutilize their potential. Part of the reason is that teams present significant challenges. In the new global marketplace, many teams have become virtual teams and are physically separated from one another. People are often unclear about how their work relates to the work of others and how their contribution makes a difference to the whole. As success-oriented individuals, we often have a hard time handing over responsibilities to others. There’s often the issue of individual accountability. Because teams present these and other challenges, there is often resistance to them.

Many organizations recognize the potential power in teams and attempt to create productive teams. However, attmpting to create a team within an organization without establishing the circumstances and processes required will actually have the negative result of frustration and reduced productivity.
